SOHKAR UP SCHOOL: A Rural Upper Primary School in Meghalaya

SOHKHAR UP SCHOOL, located in the UMLING block of RI BHOI district in Meghalaya, is a private, unaided upper primary school that offers education from the 6th to the 8th grade. Established in 2012, the school serves the rural community, offering a co-educational environment for its students.

The school’s infrastructure, while showing signs of age, offers a conducive learning environment. Despite its “Dilapidated” building, the school boasts 8 well-maintained classrooms, providing sufficient space for instruction. While there are no dedicated rooms for computer-aided learning, the school does offer access to tap water for drinking, and separate functional toilets for both boys and girls.

However, SOHKAR UP SCHOOL faces some challenges in its infrastructure. The school lacks a boundary wall, which could pose security concerns for students and staff. Additionally, the absence of electricity could hinder evening activities and limit access to technology-based learning resources. The school also lacks a library, limiting students’ access to supplementary reading materials.

Despite these limitations, SOHKAR UP SCHOOL stands out for its commitment to providing quality education in a rural setting. The school utilizes English as its medium of instruction, offering a valuable foundation for students to succeed in their future academic pursuits. The dedicated team of four female teachers strive to create an engaging and supportive learning environment for the students.

Furthermore, the school emphasizes accessibility. The school’s location, reachable via an all-weather road, makes it accessible for students from the surrounding areas. The school also prioritizes its academic calendar, with the academic session starting in April, aligning with the local context and the needs of the community.

SOHKHAR UP SCHOOL serves as a testament to the importance of providing quality education even in challenging circumstances. While the school faces some infrastructural challenges, its dedicated teachers and its commitment to accessibility underscore its dedication to serving the educational needs of the rural community. As the school continues to develop, its potential to empower students and contribute to the educational landscape of Meghalaya is promising.
